Car Hire: info on the insurance

20 octobre 2017

Visiting a destination, going on vacation or a weekend is made more convenient with a car. When calling on a rental company, it is important to keep you informed about the insurance and coverage you are entitled to in the event of an accident or other unforeseen circumstances. This will save you from spending a lot of money.

Car rental: the most popular types of insurances

Minimum insurance

Also known as third-party insurance or third-party liability insurance, this is the minimum warranty for a car rental. It covers the damage caused by the vehicle to another car, in particular its passengers and its driver. However, this type of insurance does not cover damage to the rented car, its passengers and its driver. In the event of an accident, the lessee of the vehicle is thus obliged to pay the costs for repairing the damage.

Insurance with or without franchise

When a tenant is bound to a deductible automobile insurance contract, in the event of an accident, he will only pay the amount previously indicated in the insurance contract. As for the tenant being bound to a contract of insurance without deductible, it will be, in case of accident, forced to pay a part of the expenses related to the repair of the rented car.

Loss and Collision Damage Waiver

This type of insurance covers the damage suffered by the rental vehicle, regardless of who is responsible for the accident, whether it is identified or not. Negligent acts such as improper use of fuel, drunken driving or the loss of the car keys are not covered by this insurance.

Theft Protection

As its name indicates, this insurance will protect you against theft of your rented car. By choosing this option, you should expect to see the total amount of insurance increase. Warning: this insurance does not cover you in case of loss of your car keys or personal belongings left inside the car by negligence. It also does not apply if you left the door open during your absence or if the keys have been forgotten on the door.

Our advice: take the time to read the contract offered by your renter because some do not offer franchises and the bill is likely to be high.
