Mauritius: new measures for drivers

15 juin 2018

The suspense ended on June 14th when the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Pravind Jugnauth, presented the 2018-19 budget. We will focus here on new measures applying to drivers travelling the Mauritian roads. It is also an opportunity to be reminded of the good practices and some tips that will help minimize the risk of accidents during your travels.

Motorists: the key points to remember from the budget

-          Lower prices for gasoline and diesel

The fuel goes from Rs 52 to Rs 49.95 per litre, while the diesel goes from Rs 41.90 to Rs 40 per litre.

-          Speeding fine

Those traveling at 25 km / h above the authorized maximum speed will be liable to a fine of Rs 10,000 instead of Rs 2,500.

-          Drunk driving

Zero tolerance for drunk driving! Alcohol is no more authorized at the wheel. Till yesterday, the maximum alcohol level in the blood was 0.27g/L (equivalent to a small glass). Drink or drive? You will have to choose.

Road safety first

Every day, thousands of motorists travel the road to get to a place - work, mall, store, attraction site... Collisions are unfortunately part of our daily lives. Mauritius counts 83 victims on its roads from January 1, 2018 to June 5, 2018.

The new zero tolerance policy should help prevent accidents. However, alcohol is not the only cause of accidents. Drowsiness while driving remains a point not to be taken lightly. Driving while tired can cause serious damages, hence the importance of recognizing the signs of fatigue. You have numb legs, you are constantly yawning, having trouble to stay focus and your eyes are blinking? Stop! Cranking up the volume of the radio, opening the window are the usual habits, but it remains important to stop to breathe some fresh air. It’s better to stop for a few minutes rather than risking a collision.

Mechanical problems can also be responsible for accidents. Do not accumulate delays on the maintenance of your car. Other tips: do not drive at full speed/nervously or while using the phone.
